Making Modernities
Egypt, Italy and the Making of Modern Design
An evening presentation exploring Egypt’s impact on Western modernity and the exchanges between Italian and Egyptian architects, designers, artists and artisans at the turn of the twentieth century, viewed through the lens of Egyptian Art Deco, a design language that remains to be an enigmatic amalgamation of histories and vocabularies.
This programme forms part of Egypt Art Deco, an ongoing project by HaRaKa Platform, and accompanies its current exhibition in Italy, Mutating Modernities, taking place at the Biennale dello Stretto in Reggio Calabria. Conceived by Adham Hafez and Dr. Federica Bueti, Lamia Gouda, in collaboration with Seif El Rashidi and Adam Kucharski, the project is on view in Italy until 18 December 2026.
‘Making Modernities’ is an event that expands on the project presented at the biennale, and brings together practitioners from different fields to discuss the interconnected histories of Egypt and Italy through Art Deco while asking how this shared heritage might inspire the future of contemporary architecture and design.
