la ripresa delle sessioni del seminario “Exploring Egypt: Histories and Historiographies”, un’iniziativa congiunta dell’Ifao e del DAIK, a cui quest’anno si sono aggiunti il CAI, il PCMA e il NVIC.
L’ottava sessione della serie di seminari si terrà presso il Centro Archeologico Italiano (Tahrir). Sarà presentata da Fatma Keshk e Ahmed Mansour, dal titolo “Stampa dell’Egittologia in arabo nell’Egitto del XIX secolo”. È aperta al pubblico nei limiti dei posti disponibili.
Abstract: La crescente ricerca sulla storia dell’Egittologia egiziana e sulla conoscenza prodotta dagli studiosi egiziani nell’esplorazione e diffusione della consapevolezza locale della loro antica civiltà, ha evidenziato la precoce presenza di un forte interesse a pubblicare in arabo vari argomenti che esplorano l’antico Egitto a partire dall’inizio del XIX secolo d.C.
Un esempio di queste pubblicazioni è la guida araba del Museo di Bulaq del 1869, tradotta da ʿAbd Allāh Abū al-Suʿūd (1820-1878) dalla versione francese originale di Auguste Mariette (1821-1881). Altri esempi includono titoli stampati alla pubblica stampa di Bulaq nella seconda metà del XIX secolo da Ahmed Kamal (1849-1923), Ahmed Naguib (1847-1910) e altri. Questa conferenza mira a discutere gli inizi e lo sviluppo delle pubblicazioni in lingua araba di studiosi egiziani su tutti i temi legati all’antico Egitto nel contesto più ampio dello sviluppo della stampa nell’Egitto del XIX secolo.
Fatma Keshk egittologa ed esperta di divulgazione del patrimonio culturale. Ha lavorato con diverse istituzioni locali e internazionali ed è stata direttrice della sezione archeologia e architettura del centro di documentazione del patrimonio culturale e naturale della Biblioteca di Alessandria. Le sue recenti ricerche si concentrano sulla ricostruzione della storia sconosciuta dell’Egittologia egiziana e sull’esplorazione delle percezioni della storia da parte degli egiziani contemporanei. Fatma è ricercatrice associata presso l’Ifao e membro corrispondente del DAI. Dal settembre 2024, Fatma è Senior Acquisitions Editor per Archeologia e Antico Egitto presso la American University in Cairo Press.
Ahmed Mansour, Direttore del Centro di Scrittura e Scritture della Bibliotheca Alexandrin. Egittologo di formazione, ricercatore nella storia della stampa araba e nella storia della scrittura per lavoro e ricerca. Ha conseguito il dottorato di ricerca presso l’Università di Alessandria. Inoltre, ha conseguito due lauree magistrali; una presso l’Università di Alessandria e una presso l’Università di Torino (Master di II livello). Ha partecipato a diverse missioni archeologiche: Luxor (Tomba di Harwa 2011-2012), Alessandria (Isola di Nelson 2011-2012) e membro ospite della missione archeologica di Wadi el-Jarf e della missione di Ain el-Sukhna sul Mar Rosso (2011-2013).
Exploring Egypt Seminar: Histories and Historiographies
Questa serie di seminari è realizzata in collaborazione tra il Centro Archeologico Italiano dell’ Istituto Italiano di Cultura del Cairo (CAI-IIC), l’Institut français d’archéologie orientale (ifao), l’Istituto Archeologico Germanico del Cairo (DAIK), il Centro Polacco di Archeologia Mediterranea (PCMA), l’Istituto Nederlandese-Fiammingo del Cairo (NVIK). Il programma di seminari mira a discutere diversi aspetti legati alla produzione di conoscenza storica sull’Egitto.
I relatori sono invitati a riflettere sui diversi modi di scrivere, narrare e pensare la storia dell’Egitto in diversi periodi, nonché sugli attori, i contesti e le relazioni di potere coinvolti nella produzione di narrazioni storiche. Adottando una prospettiva interdisciplinare, la serie di seminari cerca di mettere in dialogo campi che tradizionalmente sono stati esaminati separatamente, come la storia dell’Egittologia, lo studio della storiografia egiziana moderna e la storia del patrimonio e della conservazione. Inoltre, mentre la serie di seminari cerca di fare luce critica sulla formazione di specifici campi e tradizioni disciplinari, si muove anche oltre un esclusivo focus sulla scrittura storica professionale, per esplorare le varie istituzioni, generi e canali attraverso i quali le narrazioni storiche sono state prodotte e diffuse. Tra i temi che saranno discussi, ad esempio, ci sono le diverse “storie” dell’Egittologia, dell’archeologia o degli studi arabi e islamici, le rappresentazioni accademiche e “popolari” della storia e la conservazione del patrimonio come luogo di produzione di narrazioni storiche.

Printing Egyptology in Arabic during the 19th century in Egypt by Ahmed Mansour and Fatma Keshk

Resumption of the ‘Exploring Egypt: Histories and Historiographies’ Seminar sessions, a joint initiative of the Ifao and DAIK, joined this year by the CAI, PCMA & NVIC.
The 8th session of the seminar series will be hosted at the Italian Archeological Center (Tahrir). It features Fatma Keshk and Ahmed Mansour, entitled “Printing Egyptology in Arabic in 19th century Egypt” It is open to the public in the limit of available places.
Abstract: The growing research on the history of Egyptian Egyptology and the knowledge produced by Egyptian scholars in exploring and disseminating local awareness of their ancient civilization highlighted the early presence of a strong interest to publish in Arabic various topics that explore ancient Egypt since the early 19th century AD.
An example of these publications is the 1869 Arabic guide of the Bulaq Museum translated by ʿAbd Allāh Abū al-Suʿūd (1820- 1878) from the original French version of Auguste Mariette (1821-1881). Other examples include titles printed at the public Bulaq Press in the second half of the 19th century by Ahmed Kamal (1849-1923), Ahmed Naguib (1847-1910) and others. This lecture aims to discuss the beginnings and development of Arabic language publications by Egyptian scholars on all themes related to ancient Egypt in the wider context of development of press in 19th century Egypt.
Fatma Keshk, Egyptologist and heritage outreach expert. She worked with several local and international institutions and was the director of the archaeology and architecture section at the center of documentation of cultural and natural heritage at the Library of Alexandria. Her recent research concentrates on reconstructing the unknown history of Egyptian Egyptology and on exploring the perceptions of history by contemporary Egyptians. Fatma is an associate researcher at IFAO and corresponding member of the DAI. Since September 2024, Fatma is the Senior Acquisitions Editor for Archaeology and Ancient Egypt at the American University in Cairo Press.
Ahmed Mansour, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina’s Writing and Scripts Center. Egyptologist by study, researcher in the history of Arabic printing and in the history of writing by work and research. He got his PhD from Alexandria University. In addition, He has obtained two master degrees; one from Alexandria University and one from Turin University (Level II Master). He has joined several archaeological missions: Luxor (Harwa Tomb 2011-2012), in Alexandria (Nelson Island 2011-2012), and visiting member to Wadi el-Jarf archaeological mission and Ain el-Sukhna mission at the Red Sea (2011-2013).
About the Seminar
Exploring Egypt Seminar: Histories and Historiographies
This series of seminars is organized in collaboration between the Italian Archaeological Center of the Italian Cultural Institute in Cairo (CAI-IIC), the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology (IFAO), the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo (DAIK), the Polish Center of Mediterranean Archaeology (PCMA), and the Flemish Institute in Cairo (NVIK). The seminar program aims to discuss various aspects related to the production of historical knowledge about Egypt. Speakers are invited to reflect on the different ways of writing, narrating and thinking about Egypt’s history at different periods, as well as on the actors, contexts, and power relations involved in the production of historical narratives. By adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, the seminar series seeks to bring into conversation fields which have traditionally been examined separately, such as the history of Egyptology, the study of modern Egyptian historiography, and the history of heritage and preservation.
In addition, while the seminar series seeks to shed a critical light on the formation of specific disciplinary fields and traditions, it also moves beyond an exclusive focus on professional history writing, in order to explore the various institutions, genres, and channels, through which historical narratives have been produced and disseminated. Among the themes that will be discussed, for instance, are the different “histories” of Egyptology, archaeology or Arabic and Islamic studies, academic versus “popular” representations of history, and heritage preservation as a site of production of historical narratives.
