Guido è un regista quarantenne stanco, con rapporti logori con la moglie, il produttore, gli amici e persino l’amante. Insegue idee che si rivelano scialbe e peregrine, mentre un critico smonta ogni sua iniziativa con un linguaggio ermetico. Combatte con la sua coscienza, ma non riesce a trovare una nuova idea. Mentre riflette, inizia a ricordare i momenti principali della sua vita e tutte le donne che ha amato e lasciato. Un film autobiografico di Fellini che esplora le difficoltà e le tribolazioni della sua carriera.
