Al primo piano di una palazzina vivono Lucio, Sara e la loro bambina di sette anni, Francesca. Nell’appartamento accanto ci sono Giovanna e Renato, che spesso fanno da babysitter alla bambina. Una sera, Renato, a cui è stata affidata Francesca, scompare con la bambina per molte ore. Al secondo piano vive Monica, alle prese con la prima esperienza di maternità. Suo marito Giorgio è un ingegnere e trascorre lunghi periodi all’estero per lavoro. Dora è una giudice, come suo marito Vittorio. Abitano all’ultimo piano insieme al figlio di vent’anni, Andrea. Una notte il ragazzo, ubriaco, investe e uccide una donna.

بالطابق الأول من المبنى يقطن كل من لوتشيو وسارة وابنتهما فرانشيسكا البالغة من العمر سبع سنوات. يعيش في الشقة المجاورة جيوفانا وريناتو، اللذان عادة ما يقومان برعاية الطفلة. في إحدى الأمسيات يختفى ريناتو، مع الطفلة فرانتشيسكا لعدة ساعات. تعيش مونيكا في الطابق الثاني، وتواجه أول تجربة أمومة لها. زوجها جورجيو مهندس ويقضي فترات طويلة في الخارج للعمل، ودورا قاضية مثل زوجها فيتوريو.ويعيشان في الطابق العلوي مع ابنهما أندريا البالغ من العمر عشرين عامًا. ذات ليلة يتسبب الابن في حادث كبير ويقتل امرأة.

On the first floor of a building live Lucio, Sara and their seven-year-old daughter, Francesca. In the next apartment there are Giovanna and Renato, who often babysit the child. One evening, Renato, to whom Francesca has been entrusted, disappears with the child for many hours. Monica lives on the second floor, struggling with her first maternity experience. Her husband Giorgio is an engineer and spends long periods abroad for work. Dora is a judge, like her husband Vittorio. They live on the top floor with their twenty-year-old son, Andrea. One night the boy, drunk, runs over and kills a woman.
