– Stefania Fabrizi:
Il progetto prevede una installazione a parete di piccole tele dal titolo “Il mio Cairo” in cui dialogano per contrappunto ritratti a gessetto nero su sfondo ocra ( il deserto sempre presente) di persone incontrate nei giorni della residenza.
Una grande tela con il ritratto della cantante Umm Kulthum, tema che si ripeterà anche all’esterno della mostra con un murales in cui interverranno anche i bambini della City of Dead, dal titolo “Con tutto il cuore” .
La figura della grande interprete è stata scelta per la sua caratura artistica e per il suo impegno sociale che ha fatto di lei una vera icona nazionale.
Il terzo lavoro sarà una serie di piccoli acquarelli “appunti di viaggio” che raccontano veloci suggestioni raccolte durante la residenza al Cairo.
– Marco Colazzo:
Marco Colazzo è partito proprio dalla prima impressione raccolta dall’aereo, in cui pensava che tutto fosse del colore della sabbia.
Ha sviluppato in seguito la sua ricerca cromatica traendo spunto da ciò che poi si è rivelato come “alzando un velo”, dice lui, una Cairo piena di stimoli e colori. Il progetto di mostra dal titolo “l’arcobaleno sotto la sabbia” prevede quindi una serie di lavori ad olio su carta di piccole dimensioni due ovali ,olio su tela di medie dimensione ed una grande tela sempre ad olio che testimoniano appunto l’esperienza visiva ed emotiva di questo soggiorno.
– Giancarlo Limoni:
Giancarlo Limoni accoglie nel suo mondo poetico una visione della città fatta di acquarelli leggeri, dal titolo “I fiori del Cairo”, che saranno installati insieme ad una grande tela ad olio, che prenderà lo stesso titolo e parlerà appunto di una città vista come un fiore di loto nato da uno stagno di sabbia che avvolge quest’ultima e la consuma.
– Raffaele Fiorella:
Il progetto dal titolo ” Big dreamers” prevede la realizzazione di una serie di lavori ispirati al Cairo e nello specifico alla City of Dead. I lavori mettono in relazione il luogo e le persone che lo abitano. Il primo lavoro è composto da una serie di circa trenta sculture in terracotta che rappresentano idealmente l’anima della gente del posto. Una parte di queste piccole sculture, modellate nell’azione dell’attesa, intesa come condizione di persistenza umana, verrà disseminata in vari punti del luogo in maniera permanente.
Il secondo intervento prevede la realizzazione di un grande aquilone/scultura inteso come simbolo di libertà per i bambini abitanti del posto. Tale opera verrà realizzata proprio con loro che contribuiranno dipingendo sulla leggera stoffa il proprio sogno. Una video proiezione rafforzerà tale concetto.

ITALIAN REFLECTIONS
In September – October 2017, the Instituto Italiano di Cultura in Cairo is supporting an artistic residency in Egypt of four distinguished Italian artists. The programme, which is focused on the ‘City of the Dead’ in Cairo, is organised in cooperation with ARCHiNOS Architecture. The works that the Italian artists created in the Sultan Qaitbey area of the Desert of the Mamluks, will be unveiled on Sunday, 15 October 2017 at 6:00 PM at the MASQ (Maq‘ad of Sultan Qaitbey), a place for art and culture in the Qaitbey neighbourhood.
Italian Reflections is exhibition that presents the diverse results of the artists’ interaction with Egyptian people, nature, and history, during their residency in Cairo, and showing how the vibrant, ebullient and constantly changing city is reflected in their art. The exhibition will be open daily from 10:00 AM till 6:00 PM through 31 October 2017.
Giancarlo Limoni
Born in Rome in 1947, he started working very young between Rome and Milan. Throughout the 1980s he exhibited in numerous solo and group shows at the Attic Gallery Fabio Sargentini. He also participated in some of the most important artistic group of those years: “New plots of Art” in Genazzano, “80 Years” in Bologna, “The new Rome school” in Graz, “Thirty years of Attica” Spoleto, “Capodopera” in Fiesole and “Post-Abstraction” at Milan. He won the Termoli prize in 1977. He lives and works in Rome. Since 1986, he moved his studio to the Prenestino district.
IN CAIRO:
Giancarlo perceives the city of Cairo as if viewed above, amidst a boundless desert, all light and the symbolic flower of lotus, a symbol of sun, of creation, rebirth and regeneration, a flower that is formed by the sands of the desert surrounding Cairo. He draws his inspiration from Egyptian nature, colours, vibrant light, air and dust present everywhere. The symbolism of Phoenix, a bird that can rise from the ashes, a symbol of life, death and re-birth, young and powerful is particularly important in his work in the ‘City of the Dead’. The fact that here people live here among graves reminds him of his hometown, Rome, where in ancient times people also lived in the necropolis.
Giancarlo presents his work is in watercolour on paper and oil on canvas. His show at the MASQ is entitled: Fiori del Deserte (Flowers of the Desert)
Marco Colazzo
Born in Rome in 1963. Lives and works in Rome. He started to exhibit his work in early 1990s and in 200 won Modernity Award, in Palazzo Bricherasio, Turin. He participated in the Quadriennali of Rome in 1996, 2008 and the 2011 Venice Biennale in 2011. Some of his works belong to the Farnesina Experimenta Art Collection, owned by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has exhibited solo and collective shows in both public and private galleries in Italy and abroad (Paris, London, New York, Calcutta, Cairo.)
IN CAIRO:
Marco initially identified Cairo as a monochromatic city of the desert, with dust and sand ever present. But as time went by, he started to notice vibrant colurs, magical and ever-changing light in different times of a day, sunsets, wind and air, as well as various shapes, structures and landscapes, but also plentiful trash. These impressions became inspiration for his creative process, as he reflected on the abstract forms one can encounter in Cairo, transforming them into descriptive or narrative art. As the result, Marco could dig in the layers of memory and used the energy he was able to find in Cairo’s visual landscapes.
Marco’s presents his work is in oil on paper and mixed media. His show at the MASQ is entitled: Light and Colours of Egypt.
Raffaele Fiorella
Born in 1979, Raffaele lives and works in Barletta (Bari). His artistic search involves different media, including installation, video and sculpture, and he creates his parallel worlds through the smart exploitation of digital art. Between poetry and ordinary life, his work appears as a subtle, sophisticated game of contradictions. His art tells about transitory moments, fragments of real or unreal life. It tells about people, streets, and everyday life as a complex poetic reality, recreating places of memory and illusion that escape from objective spaces to find shelter in a different world, remembered or perhaps simulated.
Raffaele Fiorella’s most recent exhibitions include: Opera Viva Barriera di Milano in 2017 in Torino, Unodinno in Spacio Nea in Naples inn 2016, Fuortilogo in Museo Pino Pascali in Montesarchio (Campania) in 2015.
IN CAIRO:
Raffaele’s first impression of Cairo was chaos. His bewilderment by the sheer volume of the city with its inhabitants, traffic, colours, smells, as well as exposure to a completely new culture resulted in fresh inspiration. Especially the opportunity of working in the ‘City of the Dead’ is an important component of the creative process. Raffaele sees the area as a cultured place and looking at its inhabitants resonate in poetry, which is an important part of his creative process. Especially, the children of the area make a strong impact on him – how one can be happy with so little, unlike the children in Europe who are surrounded with industrial toys and gadgets.
Raffele presents a series of tiny clay figurines who are placed on various houses and monuments of the area and who are the ghosts of his mind. These are benevolent spirits, full of hope, who will bring happiness. Another installation, the kite, is directly inspired by the children of the area, whose favourite pastime is flying elaborate kites they make themselves. He entitles his works: TO BE ANNOUNCED
Stefania Fabrizi
Lives and works in Rome. In her investigative approach to art, she explored themes ranging from cinema to comedy, from literature to the world of sport, with mysterious figures sometimes infused by an afflicted spiritual; subjects that often turn into icons, whose transfiguration is restored in its entirety through the artist’s mastery of her media. She uses various techniques in her work.
She has exhibited at numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad, among the most recent: Italian Art for the 21st Century (Rome, Palazzo del Ministero per i Affari Esteri, 2004), Quadriennale di Roma (Palazzo delle Esposizioni, 2008), Italian Pavilion of the 54th Biennale (Rome, Palazzo Venezia 2011), Bienal Fin del Mundo (Argentina, Buenos Aires 2014); she also made the ͞Guerrieri della Luce murals in 2013 at MAAM, Museo dell’Altro e dell’Altrove di Metropoliz or Museum of the Other and Elsewhere, in Rome.
IN CAIRO:
Stefania has always been interested in people and the residency in Cairo in general, and in the ‘City of the Dead’ in particular, has offered her the opportunity to expand her interests. Observation of the local people, who are not privileged or well off, but who manage in some way to stay happy, to smile, to welcome her with love. This is something she had not expected when planning to come to Cairo, and this is what inspires her the most. They smile with love – she says. Her installation of portraits of people she encountered one way or another while in Cairo – from local glass blowers and a guard to portraits of Umm Kulthum and Sultan Qaitbey is entitled Il mio Cairo – My Cairo, (oil on canvas.)
In another series A punti di viaggo (The Bridges of the Journey) Stefania presents a series of minute watercolours reflecting her impressions of Egypt: from the pyramids and Sphinx in Giza through streets, markets, and urban landscapes to the bars and cafes of Cairo.
Stefania’s other work is a mural of Umm Kulthum painted in the square in front of the Maq’ad of Sultan Qaitbey with participation of the local children The mural will be left there for posterity as a perpetual memory of her stay in Cairo.
