TODO MODO di Elio Petri

Mentre nel Paese infuria una tremenda epidemia che provoca innumerevoli vittime, un centinaio di notabili del partito che da 30 anni governa l’Italia si riuniscono in un albergo-convento con la scusa di partecipare ad un corso di esercizi spirituali condotto da un severo gesuita, Don Gaetano. In realtà il vero scopo della riunione è quello di concordare una nuova spartizione del potere. L’atmosfera è ben presto funestata da strani eventi: un furto sacrilego induce un cardinale, indignato, a lasciare l’albergo; cominciano a volare parole grosse, scoppiano risse, compare anche un morto, e nei giorni successivi, i cadaveri si moltiplicano.

Tra i notabili, tra i quali spicca l’uomo che tutti chiamano il “Presidente”, comincia a serpeggiare il terrore: chi sarà l’assassino?

بينما ينتشر وباء رهيب البلاد، مما يسفر عن العديد من الضحايا، يجتمع نحو مائة من أبرز أعضاء الحزب الذي حكم إيطاليا لمدة 30 عامًا في دير فندقي بحجة المشاركة في دورة تأمل روحي يقودها الراهب اليسوعي الصارم، الأب غايتانو. في الواقع، الهدف الحقيقي للاجتماع هو توزيع جديد للسلطة. سرعان ما تتعكر الأجواء بأحداث غريبة: حادث سرقة يجبر كاردينالًا غاضبًا على مغادرة الدير، وتشتعل المشاجرات وتتطاير الألفاظ السيئة، ويظهر جثمان ميت. في الأيام التي تلي ذلك، تتكاثر الجثث. بين الأعضاء البارزين، وبينهم الرجل الذي يسمونه “الرئيس”، يبدأ الرعب في الانتشار: من سيكون القاتل؟

While a terrible epidemic rages through the country, claiming countless victims, about a hundred notables from the political party that has governed Italy for 30 years gather at a hotel-convent under the pretense of attending a spiritual retreat led by a stern Jesuit, Don Gaetano. In reality, the true purpose of the meeting is to negotiate a new distribution of power. The atmosphere is soon marred by strange events: a sacrilegious theft prompts a cardinal to leave the hotel in outrage; heated arguments break out, brawls erupt, and a dead body appears. In the days that follow, the corpses multiply. Among the notables, the man everyone calls the ‘President’ stands out, and fear begins to spread among them: who could be the murderer?
